Community Reads - A Wizard of Earthsea

Announcing our first ever Community Read program!

This summer, join us in reading the classic fantasy novel “A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. Le Guin. Free copies will be given out at the Circulation Desk of both Main and Avoca, starting on Monday, July 11 at 9:00 AM and will be available while supplies last, limit of one copy per patron.

Monday, July 25 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room – Book Discussion. Come talk about the book to the point you have read it! Even if you are only half-way through or have just started, let’s talk about what you think the themes are, discuss the writing style, etc.

Monday, August 15 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room – Final Book Discussion: We will wrap up our discussion of the book.

On Tuesday, August 16 between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, multi-award winning Abingdon based artist Charles Vess will speak about his four year collaboration with Le Guin to bring her vision of the Earthsea world to the page for the first time.  In 2014 Vess was chosen by Saga Press to collaborate with Le Guin to illustrate a compilation of all five of her Earthsea novels “The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition”.  Published in 2018, the collection won the 2019 Locus Award for Best Art Book and the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Art Book.

Come in to either branch, sign up for the Community Read, get your free copy, and set sail for the world of Earthsea!
