Wi-Fi

Free wireless Internet access is available to library visitors using mobile computers (laptop or PDA) with Wi-Fi capability. Wireless access uses the Wi-Fi standard IEEE802.11b/g. Wireless use is not constrained by the 1 hour time limit associated with our public computer use.

Can anyone use the service?
If you have a laptop computer with a wireless interface card, you can use the wireless network at the library.

SSID or Network Name: Sapphire WEP: Disabled
Can the library staff help me configure my computer?
The Library staff cannot assist you with your laptop, wireless card, or configuration. The Library staff cannot accept the liability of handling your equipment.

Where can I access the Bristol Public Library wireless network?
The network is accessible anyplace in the library.
Is Internet browsing restricted in any way?
Yes, the Library filters Internet access as per the requirements of the Code of Virginia 42.1-36.1. The Library will employ technology protection measures including, but not limited to, firewalls, filters, bandwidth monitoring and shaping tools, antivirus software, anti-spyware software, and pop-up blockers. The technology protection measures utilized will monitor Internet usage, as necessary, as a means of enforcing the Internet Policy.
Can I download large files?
The bandwidth available for the wireless Internet connection is shared with all others in the library. To show consideration for others’ needs, we ask that you not download excessively large files. Excessive bandwidth consumption by an individual user may result it that device being prevented from future access to the network.

Limitations and Disclaimer

The Library’s wireless network is not secure. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software. All communications are passed through the Internet without encryption. We cannot guarantee the security of any personal information that you transmit over the wireless connection after you log in to our network.

Library staff are not able to provide technical assistance, and no guarantee can be provided that you will be able to make a wireless connection.
